The rest of the audience in the crowded theater had already\nmoved on. \u201cSpiderman: Far From Home\u201d was over. The credits started rolling. A\nmid-credits scene came and went. Ooh-ahh. And then they headed for the exits as\nmore credits streamed by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHold on,\u201d I told my 13-year-old daughter who started\ngetting up. I used my \u201csuper spy\u201d voice, which actually sounds kind of creepy. \u201cThere\u2019s\nanother post-credits scene at the very end. After ALL the credits. Like 30\nminutes of credits. And I already know what it is. It\u2019s probably not even worth\nit. You want to stay to see it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSure,\u201d was her answer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We sat back in our seats. Our feet stuck to the sugary,\ncrusty goo that accumulated on the floor. More people got up and left. Maybe\nthey had dinner plans. Figured it wouldn\u2019t be worth it. Or were certain their\nfriends had lied about the secret scene tucked at the very end where, by the\nlooks of the remaining moviegoers, only super-fans or people with extremely\nboring lives even knew existed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And then it came on. Ohh-ahh. Fade to black. Curtain please.\nEverybody out. We have another film showing shortly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I smiled. \u201cI told you it wouldn\u2019t be worth it,\u201d I said. But,\nboy, was it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I can barely get my daughter to do anything with me at this\nage. Darn teenagers. The house could be on fire, and if I screamed, \u201cGET OUT \u2026\nHURRY!!!\u201d she would reply, \u201cSeriously?!? Are you going too? Can we go\nseparately? I mean, come on. Is this just another trick to get us to do\nsomething together?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTHERE\u2019S FLAMES \u2026 THE TV JUST BLEW UP \u2026 AND YES!!!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Superhero movies, though? Oh, I found her kryptonite. (Well,\nat least until she reads this column.) They\u2019ve become our unifying force. A\nsuper-bonding agent that unites us in a common good \u2013 dropping big bucks at the\nmovieplex. It also provides us with endless philosophical discussions at the\ndinner table: \u201cSo, dad, I\u2019m supposed to believe Captain America was frozen in\nsome kind of iceberg and then woke up all those years later without any kind of\nfreezer burn?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My wife can\u2019t really get into it. Which is to say she has no\ninterest. When we ask if she wants to go with us, she gives cryptic answers we\nhave to decipher like, \u201cLet me see: Would I rather have my toenails torn off\nand then sewed back on, or go see \u2018Avengers?\u2019 Let \u2026 me \u2026 see \u2026\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We look at each other and wonder, \u201cWhy can\u2019t she be more\nclear?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But that\u2019s OK. This is OUR thing. Our fix. Our bonding time.\nAnd thankfully, there\u2019s a new superhero movie released every 15 minutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We stood in line early in the morning to see \u201cAvengers:\nEndgame\u201d when it first came out. We discuss timelines and theories and how the\nmovies differ from the comic books. We compare originals to reboots, and debate\nthe merits of each. And generally, we pretty much drive my wife crazy at the\ndinner table. \u201cCan\u2019t we just discuss politics, or sit in absolute silence like\nnormal Americans?\u201d she asks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But this is OUR thing. Something that brings us together.\nBusts through the 13-year-old curse that makes fathers appear like evil interdimensional\nslugs with bad hair and a penchant for embarrassing offspring.
